In a major relief move, the Pakistani government has slashed electricity rates, reducing domestic tariffs by Rs7.41 per unit just before the summer season. Alongside this, officials are planning to remove the Pakistan Television (PTV) fee from power bills.

The Ministry of Energy has crafted a proposal to scrap this surcharge, which is currently levied on residential, industrial, and commercial consumers. Domestic users now pay Rs35 monthly for the PTV fee, with similar charges applied to businesses. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to eliminate unnecessary surcharges, including this one, to ease the burden on citizens.

Each year, the PTV fee generates nearly Rs1.5 billion from about 42.6 million electricity users. Removing it would simplify billing and bring down monthly costs for consumers.

Last week, PM Sharif also introduced a revised tariff structure, cutting rates across all sectors. Domestic rates have dropped to Rs37.64 per unit from Rs45.05, while commercial users will now pay Rs62.47 per unit—a reduction of Rs8.58. Industrial, agricultural, and general service categories also received similar rate cuts, delivering broad economic relief.
