Pakistan’s selection committee is weighing its options after star pacer Haris Rauf was ruled out of the Champions Trophy 2025 following an injury during the tri-series opener against New Zealand in Lahore. Rauf, who experienced severe pain in his chest and abdominal muscles while bowling, has been diagnosed with a muscle strain in his lower chest area. His availability for future matches remains uncertain as he consults medical professionals.
Rauf had bowled 6.2 overs, conceding 23 runs and taking 1 wicket, before being forced to leave the field. With his absence now confirmed, the selection committee is reportedly considering three fast bowlers—Mohammad Wasim Jr, Mohammad Ali, and Akif Javed—as potential replacements for the upcoming matches.\

Among the contenders, Akif Javed has emerged as the frontrunner, with an official announcement expected soon. Javed’s recent performances and his ability to bowl with pace and control have positioned him as a strong candidate to fill the void left by Rauf. However, concerns about Pakistan’s bowling balance remain, especially with the lack of spin options in the current squad.
Former Pakistan cricketer Wasim Akram has raised concerns about the lack of spinners in the team, especially given the pitch conditions Pakistan faced in their defeat to New Zealand, where the Kiwis posted a commanding total of 330. Akram argued that Pakistan’s reliance on pace could be problematic as the Champions Trophy progresses, especially on spin-friendly pitches.
With the ICC squad deadline looming, Pakistan must make its final decision before the February 11 cutoff. Any changes beyond this deadline will require approval from the ICC Technical Committee, leaving little time for further deliberation.
