Hyderabad Highway Reopens After Lawyers End Three-Day Protest

The National Highway in Hyderabad was reopened to traffic after a three-day protest by lawyers, who had been demanding the transfer of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Farrukh Lanjar. The protest began following the registration of an FIR against an advocate for using fancy number plates and tinted windows on his vehicle.

Lawyers staged a sit-in at the Bypass, blocking the roads and significantly disrupting daily commutes for residents. Their demand for SSP Lanjar’s transfer quickly gained momentum as several political and religious parties, as well as trader unions from Hyderabad, voiced support for the lawyers’ cause. Protests spread beyond Hyderabad, with lawyers from Mirpurkhas, Tando Allah Yar, Mehrabpur, and Jamshoro organizing sit-ins and blockading highways.

The situation was defused when the Sindh Police proposed the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the matter. The lawyers conditionally agreed to the proposal but continued to insist on SSP Lanjar’s transfer.

Hyderabad Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Tariq Razak Dharejo confirmed that SSP Lanjar’s leave application was approved, and the additional charge for Hyderabad was assigned to SSP Tando Mohammad Khan. Following this assurance, the lawyers called off their protest.

In defense of the police actions, Sindh Police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon stated that the police acted in accordance with the law and did not commit any wrongdoing. He expressed frustration over the lack of societal cooperation, adding that resisting the protests could have worsened the situation for commuters.

With the protests over and the roads cleared, life in Hyderabad has returned to normal, bringing relief to the city’s residents who had been affected by the disruptions.
