Newborn Found Alive in Plastic Bag in Lahore

In a heart-wrenching incident, a newborn baby girl was discovered alive inside a plastic bag at an under-construction house in Lahore’s Gajjumata area. The discovery was made following a distress call to Rescue 1122, which prompted immediate action by rescue teams. The baby, despite the alarming circumstances, was found alive and quickly transported to the Children’s Hospital for medical care.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz took swift notice of the situation, directing the Child Protection Bureau to take custody of the infant. Sarah Ahmed, Chairperson of the bureau, confirmed that a team was sent to the hospital to ensure the baby receives the best possible care and protection. The bureau’s team will be responsible for the child’s nurturing as part of the government’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable children.

Authorities are investigating how the baby ended up at the site and are working to identify those responsible for abandoning her. The incident has sparked widespread concern, and officials are taking steps to ensure the child’s safety.

In a related development, efforts to improve newborn care in Pakistan continue. A new sick newborn care unit was recently inaugurated at the Women and Children Hospital in Abbottabad by Advisor to K-P Chief Minister on Health, Ihtesham Khan, alongside UNICEF officials. This unit aims to address high newborn mortality rates in the region, with plans for similar units in district-level hospitals across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
