After the drawn Brisbane Test against Australia, Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket during a joint press conference with captain Rohit Sharma.

“I won’t take much of your time; today marks my last day as an international cricketer,” Ashwin said. He reflected on the memories shared with teammates like Rohit Sharma and others throughout his career, despite losing touch with some post-retirement.

Ashwin expressed gratitude to the BCCI, coaches, and teammates, including Rohit, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, and Cheteshwar Pujara, for their unwavering support.

Without taking any questions from journalists, Ashwin left the press conference. Rohit Sharma later stated it was Ashwin’s decision, which must be respected.

Before the announcement, a viral video of Virat Kohli hugging Ashwin in the dressing room during the India-Australia match had sparked speculation about his retirement.

Ashwin, who played the second Test of the series in Adelaide and took just one wicket, will continue in the T20 format, representing Chennai Super Kings in the 2025 IPL.
