Balochistan Governor Emphasizes Women’s Rights and Economic Empowerment at Gender-Based Violence Event
QUETTA: Balochistan Governor Jaffar Khan Mandokhel has called for actionable steps to protect women’s human rights, highlighting that while civilised societies globally are introducing laws to protect animals and birds, the protection of women’s rights should not be neglected.
Speaking at a ceremony to mark the “Sixteen Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence” at the Governor House, Governor Mandokhel posed the critical question: “How can we remain indifferent to protecting the rights of women?” He was addressing an audience that included representatives from various organizations, such as UN Women, WHO, and the Women Development Department of Balochistan.

The event, which aimed to raise awareness about gender-based violence, featured prominent figures such as Ghazala Gola, Deputy Speaker of the Balochistan Assembly, and Rubaba Khan Buledi and Naseem-ur-Rehman Malakhail, both advisers to the Chief Minister.
Governor Mandokhel emphasized that women are the pride and dignity of any society, and their protection should be a collective responsibility. “Whether as a mother, sister, wife, or daughter, the relationship between men and women must always be based on honor and respect,” he asserted. He stressed the need for public awareness campaigns over the next 16 days to highlight these issues across the province.
He also pointed out the lack of economic independence for many women, which leads to their dependency on men. According to the governor, this economic dependence often limits women’s participation in broader social and economic spheres.
Governor Mandokhel praised the efforts made during the 16 days of activism aimed at preventing violence against women. He also highlighted that women are often better suited than men in areas like educating children and managing household affairs, underscoring their significant contributions to society.
Regarding the women of Balochistan, the governor acknowledged that although they are equally talented and capable as women in other provinces, they face challenges due to the lack of essential facilities and opportunities. He urged the government and private sectors to take responsibility for creating new programs aimed at the social and economic empowerment of women, which would facilitate their progress in various fields of life.
This event underlined the importance of fostering a culture of respect, protection, and empowerment for women, and Governor Mandokhel’s remarks emphasized the need for systemic change to address gender-based violence and promote women’s rights in the region.
