Baba Siddique, a leader of India’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), was shot dead in Mumbai’s Bandra on Saturday, according to local media reports. He was known for hosting annual Iftar dinners and was shot in the chest with three bullets before being taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde confirmed Siddique’s death based on police reports. He was attacked by unidentified assailants outside his son’s office in Bandra and transported to Lilavati Hospital.

A police official stated, “Two to three rounds were fired. Further investigation is underway as teams have rushed to the area,” though the motive behind the assassination has not yet been confirmed.

At 65, Siddique was a prominent Muslim political figure in Maharashtra, serving as minister for Labor, FDA, and Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies. He was more recognized for his socialite image and extravagant annual iftar parties than his political contributions, having recently transitioned to the NCP from the Indian National Congress.R
