Breakthrough Achieved in Government-JUI Talks on Constitutional Amendment

The government has made a breakthrough in talks with JUI leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman regarding the proposed 26th constitutional amendment, sources revealed on Tuesday.

The agreement includes the establishment of a constitutional court, with the amendment expected to be tabled in parliament after the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) session on October 15 and 16 in Islamabad.

The proposed amendment was discussed in a meeting at the Presidency, attended by President Asif Ali Zardari, PM Shehbaz Sharif, Nawaz Sharif, and Maulana Fazlur Rehman, where the government accepted Rehman’s suggestions.

Senator Kamran Murtaza confirmed that the JUI received a draft of the amendment proposals from the People’s Party but is still awaiting proposals from the PML-N before further talks progress.
