The legal proceedings began in September 2020 after a complaint was filed, leading the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to pursue charges against her. Despite attempts to secure bail, both lower and higher courts denied her requests.

Human rights organizations have expressed alarm over the ruling, with the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan calling for investigations into related killings and urging the government to confront the rising tide of radicalism in the nation.
