Doctors, nurses, and social activists have taken to the streets across India to protest the brutal rape and murder of Moumita Debnath, a female trainee doctor, at a hospital in Kolkata. Thousands of medical professionals participated in rallies, demanding justice and the resignation of the principal of RG Kar Medical College. While most protests remained peaceful, there were reports of some incidents of vandalism.
Initially reported as a suicide, Moumita’s death was later revealed through an autopsy to be a case of rape and murder, with the victim suffering severe physical assault. Her death has not only shocked the nation but also exposed potential criminal activities on the campus, including allegations of illegal dealings. Accusations implicating influential figures in the case have further fueled public outrage and demands for a thorough investigation.

In response to the incident, several medical services were halted as protesters called for better protection for healthcare workers. Moumita Debnath, a dedicated medical professional and environmental scientist from West Bengal, was a second-year postgraduate trainee specializing in chest medicine at a local Medical College. She was also pursuing a doctorate in environmental science. On August 9, 2024, she was found dead on campus, having been sexually assaulted and murdered. Her tragic death has sparked a broader discussion on the safety and well-being of healthcare professionals in India.
During the investigation, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, has been identified in connection with the crime.
Moumita’s brutal murder underscores the persistent issue of sexual violence against women and girls in India. Despite existing legal frameworks designed to prevent such crimes, cases of rape and assault remain alarmingly frequent.
