Additionally, Tariq Bashir Cheema lost his position as central secretary general.
The general council’s attendees chose Kamil Ali Aghan as the central secretary general and Chaudhry Wajahat Hussain, Shujaat’s brother, as the next party president.
Further, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi was elected uncontested as president of PML-Q Punjab at the meeting held at the Muslim League House.
Party officials and leaders from Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Sindh participated in the meeting as well as PML-Q officials from Azaad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).
Additionally, former MNAs, ticket holders and senators were also present at the meeting.
In July last year, the PML-Q had decided to remove Shujaat and Cheema from their positions and hold fresh intra-patry elections.
However, Shujaat moved the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) which restrained the party from holding intra-party polls.
Pervaiz Elahi’s membership in the party was suspended by Chaudhry Shujaat last week as a result of his remarks criticising the party’s merger with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The PML-Q was registered in Shujaat’s name, therefore the party could not have been combined with the PTI at Elahi’s whim, according to sources at the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
Elahi was given seven days to respond to a show-cause notice requesting an explanation of his unlawful acts. “Elahi will face consequences if he fails to provide an explanation.”
Also receiving show-cause letters from Cheema were Senator Agha, Moonis, and Hussain. “If you are going to any other party, then quit,” the notices read. Action will be taken in accordance with articles 16 and 50 of the party constitution if you fail to comply.
Elahi expressed his confidence that this step would further strengthen the PTI after meeting with PTI chairman Imran Khan and saying that he was contemplating the offer and that his party’s leadership will soon come to a consensus on it.
