National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has assumed charge as Acting President of Pakistan. He will perform presidential duties during the absence of two senior constitutional officeholders.
President Asif Ali Zardari is currently on an official visit to Austria. His visit is scheduled from August 27 to August 31, 2026.
Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani is also abroad on an official visit. Both officials are therefore currently outside Pakistan.
Their simultaneous absence has activated the constitutional arrangement for performing presidential functions. Under the relevant provisions, Ayaz Sadiq will carry out the duties of the President.
Ayaz Sadiq to Perform Presidential Functions
Ayaz Sadiq will perform the responsibilities of Acting President during this period. His temporary role will continue until the President or Senate Chairman returns to Pakistan.
The arrangement ensures that the functions of the presidency continue without interruption. It also provides a constitutional mechanism during the President’s absence.
As Acting President, Sadiq will discharge responsibilities according to the relevant constitutional provisions. His temporary position does not change the status of the elected President.
President Zardari will remain the country’s President throughout his official visit. Sadiq is only performing the presidential functions during the specified period.
President Zardari’s Austria Visit
President Asif Ali Zardari left for Austria for an official visit on August 27. His scheduled visit will continue through August 31.
The visit has resulted in the temporary transfer of presidential responsibilities. Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani’s absence has also contributed to the arrangement.
The constitutional framework provides continuity when the President cannot perform his functions. It allows another constitutional officeholder to discharge presidential duties temporarily.
Temporary Constitutional Arrangement
The current arrangement is temporary and will remain in place during the relevant period. Ayaz Sadiq will continue performing presidential functions until the required constitutional condition changes.
The National Assembly Speaker will retain his parliamentary responsibilities while serving as Acting President. His additional duties are based on the constitutional provisions governing presidential absence.
The arrangement ensures that important presidential functions remain operational. It also prevents an interruption in constitutional responsibilities during official foreign visits.
Sadiq’s temporary role does not indicate a permanent change in Pakistan’s presidency. President Zardari continues to hold the office of President.
The Acting President will perform the required duties until either Zardari or Gilani returns to Pakistan. The constitutional arrangement will then come to an end.
The development highlights the country’s constitutional procedure for maintaining continuity. It ensures that presidential responsibilities remain active even when senior officials are abroad.
