Harry Kane Heartbroken After England's World Cup Exit

England captain Harry Kane expressed his disappointment after his side’s dramatic 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final, admitting that England failed to cope with sustained pressure after taking the lead.

England appeared to be on course for a place in the World Cup final when Anthony Gordon scored in the 55th minute. However, Argentina mounted a relentless comeback, with Enzo Fernandez equalising before Lautaro Martinez struck a stoppage-time winner to send the defending champions into the final.

Speaking after the match, Kane said England performed well for much of the game but acknowledged that his side became too defensive after opening the scoring.

“We played a good game for the large majority of it. Once we went 1-0 up, we seemed to just try and hold on,” Kane told the BBC.

He admitted that defending a narrow lead against a team of Argentina’s quality was never likely to succeed.

“At this level, it’s not enough,” Kane said. “We’re gutted because we’ve worked so hard to be here and the lads have given every last bit of running, sweat, blood and tears.”

The England captain described how Argentina continuously piled forward after falling behind, making it increasingly difficult for his teammates to withstand the pressure.

“It was wave after wave, and we were trying to hold on by putting blocks in. In the end, it wasn’t enough,” he said.

Kane also revealed that the team’s plan after scoring was to continue attacking rather than protect the lead, but Argentina’s momentum eventually shifted the contest.

“The messaging was to go again and get another goal,” he explained. “Once they scored twice, we tried to find something again, but we couldn’t get the momentum back.”

Despite the heartbreaking defeat, Kane praised England’s overall World Cup campaign, saying the squad had shown quality throughout the tournament by reaching another semi-final.

“We’re close. We just need to find that missing piece in the final stage of the tournament,” he said.

England’s defeat extends the nation’s wait for a second FIFA World Cup title, with their only triumph still dating back to 1966. Meanwhile, Argentina will face Spain in Sunday’s final as they attempt to retain the World Cup crown.
