The PMD has forecast near-normal monsoon rainfall for Gilgit-Baltistan, nearby parts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, the weather agency has warned that higher-than-normal temperatures could increase the risk of floods, landslides, and glacier-related hazards across the region.
According to the latest monsoon outlook for the Hindu Kush-Karakoram-Himalaya region, the PMD expects temperatures to remain above average in most mountain areas during the season. Eastern parts of Gilgit-Baltistan and nearby locations are likely to experience stronger warming than usual.
The warmer weather may speed up the melting of snow and glaciers. This could increase the amount of water flowing into rivers and streams. As a result, flood risks may rise in valleys that are already vulnerable during the monsoon season.
The PMD said that heavy rainfall over short periods could also create dangerous conditions. Flash floods, landslides, debris flows, and slope failures are possible in many mountainous areas. These events can damage roads, homes, and public infrastructure while disrupting travel.
The department also warned about the possibility of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). These floods happen when water stored in glacial lakes suddenly bursts through natural barriers. Rising temperatures can increase the chances of such events in glacier-rich regions.
Residents living near rivers, streams, and glacial valleys have been advised to stay alert throughout the monsoon season. Authorities have urged people to follow official weather updates and safety instructions to reduce risks during heavy rain.
Despite these concerns, the forecast also carries some positive news. Near-normal rainfall is expected to improve water availability for agriculture and local communities. However, the PMD stressed that localized heavy rain can still cause serious hydro-meteorological hazards, even when overall rainfall remains close to normal.
The warning comes as several parts of Gilgit-Baltistan are already facing weather-related disruptions. Recent landslides and rockfalls have blocked important roads in the region, affecting transportation and daily life.
The Gilgit-Baltistan Communication and Works Department reported that the Astore Valley Road has been closed at several locations due to landslides and large falling rocks. Clearing operations are expected to continue until travel becomes safe again.
Road connections to Chipurson Valley and Misgar Valley in upper Hunza have also been cut off after rainfall triggered landslides and mudflows. The closures have isolated remote communities and created additional challenges for residents.
Officials continue to monitor the situation as the monsoon season progresses. Emergency services and local authorities are preparing for possible weather-related incidents in high-risk areas.

The latest PMD forecast highlights the need for preparedness during the monsoon. While rainfall may remain near normal, rising temperatures and rapid glacier melt could increase the chances of floods and other natural hazards across northern Pakistan. Following official advisories and avoiding unnecessary travel during severe weather can help reduce the impact of these risks.
