Large crowds have gathered in Tehran as Iran officially started the public funeral ceremonies for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country’s late Supreme Leader. Millions of mourners are expected to take part in the historic event, making it one of the largest public gatherings in Iran in recent years.
The main funeral ceremony is being held at the Grand Mosalla religious complex in Tehran. Officials said representatives from more than 100 countries are also expected to attend the event, highlighting its international significance. Foreign dignitaries, religious leaders, and government officials have reportedly arrived in the Iranian capital to pay their respects.
According to reports, roads leading to the Grand Mosalla complex were packed with mourners dressed in black. Many participants carried Iranian flags, portraits, and banners honoring Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Videos shared on social media appeared to show thousands of people walking toward the venue from different parts of the city.
Additional footage released by Iran’s ISNA news agency reportedly showed long queues forming outside Tehran metro stations before the ceremony began. Public transportation remained crowded as people continued arriving throughout the morning. Thousands had already gathered inside and around the Grand Mosalla complex well before the official funeral services started.
Authorities have put extensive security and traffic management measures in place to accommodate the massive number of attendees. The funeral is expected to continue with religious prayers, official tributes, and public mourning ceremonies.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump spoke about Iran during an event marking the 250th anniversary celebrations of the United States. During his remarks, Trump said he believed Iran wanted to reach a settlement with Washington.
He also claimed that the United States had given Tehran “a week off” to allow time for the funeral ceremonies of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Trump stated that Iran was eager to reach an agreement and added that Washington had temporarily paused its actions because, in his words, “we’re nice.”
The funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei continues to draw millions of mourners and global attention, reflecting both its national importance and its wider diplomatic significance.
