PM Shehbaz Sharif to Attend Iran's Supreme Leader's Funeral in Tehran

PM Shehbaz Sharif is expected to visit Tehran in early July as part of a regional diplomatic tour, according to diplomatic sources. The visit will begin with his participation in the funeral of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Seyyed Ali Khamenei. The trip reflects continued diplomatic engagement between Pakistan and Iran following recent high-level exchanges.

According to sources, PM Shehbaz Sharif will arrive in Tehran on the evening of July 2 with an official delegation. He is scheduled to attend the funeral ceremony on July 3. After the event, the prime minister is expected to leave for Turkey later the same day.

The visit comes shortly after Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian traveled to Islamabad. That visit focused on strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between the two neighboring countries. Officials say both sides remain committed to maintaining regular diplomatic contact.

Diplomatic sources also said preparations are underway for a meeting between PM Shehbaz Sharif and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on July 4. The two leaders are expected to discuss recent regional developments, including the situation following the Iran-US memorandum of understanding, as well as ways to deepen cooperation between Pakistan and Turkey.

The planned discussions are also expected to cover trade, investment, regional security, and political coordination. Pakistan and Turkey have maintained close relations for many years and continue to work together on regional and international issues.

The Turkey visit will follow the Tehran trip and is expected to include additional meetings with senior Turkish officials. The discussions are likely to focus on strengthening bilateral ties and reviewing the latest developments in the region.

Diplomatic engagement between Pakistan and Iran has continued through a series of official visits. Sources also said President Asif Ali Zardari is expected to travel to Tehran later this month. During the proposed visit, he is expected to meet Iran’s senior leadership.

However, officials said the schedule for President Zardari’s visit has not yet been finalized. Earlier plans for the trip were postponed because of regional tensions and the conflict involving Iran and the United States.

According to diplomatic sources, President Pezeshkian renewed his invitation to President Zardari during his recent visit to Islamabad. The invitation was accepted, but officials are still working on the final travel schedule.

A spokesperson for the president said no official dates have been confirmed. The spokesperson added that the invitation remains valid and the final decision regarding the visit will be made by President Zardari.
