KMC Approves Rs. 750 Million Solarization Project for Karachi

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has announced a Rs. 750 million solarization project for the fiscal year 2026-27. The initiative is part of its plan to improve energy efficiency and promote sustainable urban development across Karachi. Officials say the project will help reduce electricity costs while improving public services.

Under the new plan, KMC will install solar systems at union committees, municipal buildings, public streets, and selected roads. The project aims to reduce dependence on conventional electricity and increase the use of renewable energy in public infrastructure.

Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab said the project will also improve civic services in areas affected by frequent power outages. Many neighborhoods continue to face load shedding, making reliable energy important for daily operations. The solar systems are expected to provide a more stable power supply for public facilities.

The mayor said the solarization initiative is part of KMC’s long-term strategy to modernize city infrastructure. He added that climate resilience and energy sustainability have become essential for responsible urban management. The corporation wants to build a cleaner and more efficient city through renewable energy projects.

According to the mayor, KMC began adopting renewable energy more than two years ago. During that period, around 50 streetlights were provided to every union committee without political consideration. The program was introduced to improve road safety and public convenience throughout the city.

More than Rs. 110 million has been spent during the current fiscal year on improving street-lighting infrastructure. Major roads, including Sharea Faisal, Shahrah-e-Firdousi, and Shahrah-e-Iran, have received better lighting and infrastructure upgrades. These improvements have enhanced visibility and improved the overall appearance of Karachi.

KMC has already completed the solarization of parts of its head office. Officials said the project has reduced electricity expenses while lowering the environmental impact. Following these positive results, the corporation plans to expand solar systems to more offices, union committee buildings, and other public facilities.

The project is expected to benefit communities where electricity shortages continue to disrupt daily life. The mayor said the current administration has focused on completing projects instead of limiting them to announcements. He added that residents can judge the administration through visible improvements in roads, parks, street lighting, digital governance, revenue reforms, and municipal services.
