Ben Stokes Breaks Silence After Nightclub Curfew Controversy

England captain Ben Stokes has apologized after a nightclub incident resulted in him breaking the team curfew ahead of the third and final Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. The incident drew attention away from England’s preparations for the series decider and prompted the all-rounder to take responsibility for his actions.

Speaking to the media before the final Test, Stokes acknowledged that the incident had affected not only himself but also the entire England squad. He said one of his first responsibilities as captain was to apologize, recognizing that the controversy impacted teammates, coaching staff, and people beyond the dressing room. He specifically mentioned that Joe Root had to step back into the captaincy because of the situation.

Stokes also admitted that the controversy overshadowed the Test debuts of Jordan Cox, Sonny Baker, and James Rew. He said their first appearances for England should have been the main focus, but the off-field incident instead dominated headlines on what should have been one of the biggest moments of their cricket careers.

The England skipper said leadership means accepting responsibility during difficult moments rather than only enjoying success. Stokes acknowledged that ignoring the incident would have been the wrong approach and stressed that it was important to address the matter openly. He added that he had personally apologized to those affected, particularly Root, who had previously stepped down from England’s captaincy before unexpectedly returning to lead the team.

Stokes praised Root for stepping up when needed, describing him as not only one of cricket’s finest players but also someone with exceptional character. He said the pair have known each other since childhood and appreciated Root’s willingness to accept additional responsibility despite no longer serving as England’s full-time captain.

Despite the off-field controversy, Stokes insisted England’s attention is now fully on the decisive Test against New Zealand. With the three-match series level at 1-1, he said the team is determined to secure victory at Trent Bridge, a venue where England has produced several memorable performances in recent years. He emphasized that the squad’s focus is now entirely on winning the series.
