USA Launches Airstrike on Iran After Strait of Hormuz Attack

The United States has carried out airstrikes against Iranian military targets after accusing Tehran of launching a drone attack on a commercial cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, significantly escalating tensions between the two countries and raising fresh concerns over security in one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes.

According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the military operation was launched on June 26 in response to what it described as Iran’s attack a day earlier on the Singapore-flagged cargo ship M/V Ever Lovely. The vessel was reportedly sailing along the Omani coast while exiting the Strait of Hormuz when it was allegedly struck by a one-way attack drone. The United States said the incident endangered commercial shipping and violated the existing ceasefire arrangements in the region.

CENTCOM stated that American aircraft targeted Iranian missile and drone storage facilities, along with coastal radar installations believed to support military operations near the Strait of Hormuz. The command described the strikes as a proportionate response aimed at deterring further attacks on international shipping. It also said U.S. forces remain deployed in the region and continue working with partners to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the strategic waterway.

Reacting to the military action, U.S. Vice President JD Vance defended Washington’s decision, saying any act of violence against international shipping would be met with force. He added that if Iran had concerns regarding the implementation of the memorandum of understanding between the two sides, it should raise them through diplomatic channels instead of resorting to military action. The United States maintained that freedom of navigation remains a key priority in the Gulf region.

Iran responded with strong warnings, as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) vowed to retaliate against the U.S. strikes. According to Iran’s state news agency, the IRGC claimed its naval and air defense units successfully repelled an American attack targeting Sirik Island. Iranian military officials said the latest U.S. operation would not go unanswered and warned that any future military action by Washington would trigger a stronger and more decisive response.

The latest exchange of military action marks another serious escalation in the long-running tensions between the United States and Iran. Iranian officials accused Washington of fueling instability in the region through continued military operations, while reaffirming their commitment to defending the country’s sovereignty. The developments have renewed concerns over the security of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic passage that handles a significant share of global oil and commercial shipping, with analysts warning that further escalation could disrupt international trade and energy markets.
