Punjab Suspends Registration of 850,000 Tax-Defaulting Vehicles

The Punjab Excise Department has suspended the registration status of more than 850,000 vehicles belonging to token tax defaulters as authorities intensify efforts to recover outstanding dues before the close of the current fiscal year.

According to officials, strict enforcement measures have been ordered during the final seven days of the fiscal year to boost tax collection and ensure compliance with provincial tax regulations.

The department has directed field officers to take action against vehicle owners who have failed to pay their annual token tax. Authorities said the campaign is aimed at recovering billions of rupees in pending taxes before June 30.

Officials revealed that more than 1.7 million vehicle owners across Punjab are liable to pay annual token tax. Of these, nearly 875,000 owners have already paid approximately Rs9 billion in taxes, while more than 850,000 others still owe over Rs9 billion.

In response to the large volume of unpaid dues, the Excise Department has suspends the registration status of defaulting vehicles in its system and launched a province-wide enforcement drive.

As part of the campaign, Excise and Taxation Officers (ETOs) have been instructed to establish checkpoints at various locations from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. under their direct supervision. Daily progress reports on tax recovery and enforcement activities will also be submitted to the Director General’s Office.

Officials emphasized that the registration status of defaulting vehicles will remain suspended until all outstanding token tax liabilities are cleared in full.

The department has urged vehicle owners to settle their dues promptly to avoid legal complications and restore their registration status.
