Has Pakistan Reinstated Previous Motorway Speed Limits?

Reports circulating on social media and several online platforms about the restoration of the motorway speed limit to 120 km/h on Pakistan’s motorways are incorrect, according to the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP). Authorities have clarified that the current restrictions remain unchanged and continue to be enforced across the country.

The clarification follows widespread speculation suggesting that the government had decided to reinstate the previous motorway speed limit for cars and light transport vehicles (LTVs). However, NHMP officials have denied these claims and stated that no notification or directive has been issued regarding any increase in speed limits.

Pakistan revised speed regulations on motorways and national highways in March 2026 as part of a broader strategy to reduce fuel consumption and improve energy efficiency. The decision came during a period of high international oil prices, prompting the government to introduce measures aimed at conserving petroleum products and lowering overall fuel usage.

Under the revised policy, the motorway speed limit for cars and light transport vehicles was reduced from 120 km/h to 100 km/h. Similarly, the maximum speed allowed for passenger buses and heavy transport vehicles was lowered from 110 km/h to 90 km/h. The changes were implemented nationwide and remain in effect.

In recent days, reports emerged claiming that authorities had restored the previous 120 km/h limit for private vehicles traveling on motorways. These reports quickly gained attention online, leading to confusion among motorists and transport operators.

Responding to the speculation, a spokesperson for the Motorway Police confirmed that the current speed restrictions remain unchanged. The official emphasized that drivers must continue to follow the existing rules and that any future changes to the motorway speed limit would be announced through official government channels.

The NHMP has advised motorists to rely only on verified information and avoid sharing unconfirmed reports. Drivers are also reminded to adhere to the prescribed speed limits to ensure road safety, reduce fuel consumption, and avoid penalties for traffic violations.
