PTA Releases New Advisory to Secure Online Accounts

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a fresh advisory urging internet users to take stronger measures to protect their online accounts from cyber threats and digital fraud.

In its latest guidance, the PTA emphasized the importance of creating strong and unique passwords for all online platforms. The authority said that secure password management should become a regular habit for users to reduce the risk of unauthorized access and cyberattacks.

The advisory highlighted the need for enabling two-factor authentication (2FA), describing it as an effective way to add an extra layer of security to digital accounts. By requiring a second verification step, users can better safeguard their personal information even if their passwords are compromised.

The PTA also cautioned citizens against reusing the same password across multiple websites and applications. According to the authority, using identical credentials on different platforms can significantly increase vulnerability if one account is breached. It further warned that simple and predictable passwords are easier for cybercriminals to crack and should be avoided.

Users were advised not to create passwords based on personal details such as names, birthdays, phone numbers, or commonly used number sequences. The regulator recommended updating passwords periodically and ensuring that login credentials are never shared with others.

In addition to password security, the PTA encouraged people to take advantage of modern biometric protection methods wherever available. Features such as fingerprint authentication and facial recognition can provide an added level of security and help prevent unauthorized access to devices and accounts.

The authority stressed that maintaining strong cybersecurity practices is essential in today’s digital age, where online scams and cybercrime continue to evolve. It noted that responsible internet usage, combined with secure account management, can play a major role in creating a safer online environment for everyone.

The PTA urged citizens to remain vigilant and follow its cybersecurity recommendations to better protect their personal data, financial information, and digital identities from potential threats.
