The Punjab government has approved a major policy change that will allow teenagers aged 16 to obtain a driving license for motorcycles. The move is aimed at providing legal riding opportunities to young motorists while ensuring compliance with traffic regulations.
The decision was approved by the provincial cabinet and has now entered the final stage of the legal process. Following the approval, the Punjab Home Department forwarded the proposal to the Law Department for the issuance of an official gazette notification.
According to officials, the notification is expected to be issued after the completion of legal formalities. Once notified, eligible 16-year-olds across Punjab will be able to apply for a driving license specifically for motorcycle use.
Under the new policy, holders of this driving license will only be permitted to ride motorcycles. They will also be allowed to carry one passenger while traveling. However, the government has imposed several restrictions to ensure safety and proper regulation.
Authorities have clarified that teenagers receiving a driving license under the revised rules will not be allowed to operate rickshaws, commercial vehicles, or public transport. The permission applies exclusively to motorcycles and does not extend to any form of commercial driving activity.
Officials further stated that applicants must meet all legal requirements before obtaining a licence. This includes passing the prescribed driving tests, fulfilling documentation requirements, and demonstrating knowledge of traffic laws and road safety measures.
The Punjab Home Department has already submitted the approved summary to the Law Department for final notification. After the official announcement is issued, the new licensing framework will become effective throughout the province.
Government officials believe the initiative will help regulate young riders and encourage legal compliance among teenagers. They emphasized that obtaining a driving license will remain subject to strict testing and eligibility criteria to ensure public safety.
The new driving license policy is expected to benefit thousands of young motorcycle riders across Punjab while promoting responsible driving practices on the roads.
