Punjab is likely to continue its free public transport facility for another month, according to official sources. The final decision will be made in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Monday.
The Punjab Transport Department has already sent its recommendations for the extension. Officials say the process has been completed, and only formal approval remains. If approved, the facility will continue for another month across major transport systems in the province.
Under the proposal, free travel will remain available on the Orange Line train and Metro Bus services. Passengers will also continue receiving free rides on Speedo Bus and Electric Bus routes.
The initiative was introduced as a relief measure after the recent increase in petroleum prices. The government aimed to reduce travel costs for citizens who rely on public transport daily.
Officials say the scheme has benefited millions of people since its launch. Around 290,000 passengers use the Orange Line train free of cost each day. More than 100,000 passengers travel daily on Metro Bus services without paying fares.
Across Punjab, nearly 800,000 citizens are benefiting from the free travel program every day. Authorities believe the facility has helped reduce the financial burden on families during a time of rising living costs.
According to sources, Maryam Nawaz has called a meeting to review the proposal and assess the impact of the relief measure. The meeting will also consider future transport policies based on fuel price trends.
The Transport Department has suggested that the facility should be gradually withdrawn once petroleum prices return to normal levels. This step is being considered to balance public relief with long-term financial planning.
Government officials say the decision will be based on both economic conditions and public needs. A formal announcement is expected after the meeting.
If the extension is approved, commuters across Punjab will continue to receive free travel support for another month. This would provide continued relief to daily passengers who depend on public transport for work, education, and other needs.
