Punjab Abolishes Thousands of Vacant Government Posts Ahead of Budget

The government of Punjab has taken a major decision to abolish thousands of long-vacant posts across various departments. This move comes ahead of the upcoming provincial budget planning. Officials say the step is part of broader financial reforms.

In Punjab, nearly 30,000 vacant posts in the School Education Department Punjab have been removed. These posts had remained unfilled for several years. Despite this, they were still shown in official budget documents.

Authorities explained that salary allocations were listed for these posts. However, no actual payments were being made. The Punjab government decided to eliminate them to improve financial efficiency.

Officials said the aim is to reduce unnecessary budget pressure. They also want to streamline government spending. The decision is expected to help improve fiscal management in Punjab.

The education department was the most affected due to its large workforce. It is the biggest civilian employer in the province. Thousands of posts were also reviewed in other departments.

In the Agriculture Department, around 5,199 vacant posts were abolished. The Directorate General Public Relations saw more than 300 posts removed. Around 200 posts were cut in the Information and Culture Department.

Other departments affected include Health, Forestry, Irrigation, Housing, Special Education, and Prosecution. The Punjab government says these changes are part of a wider restructuring plan.

Officials from the Finance Department Punjab are reviewing further adjustments. Reports suggest that up to 100,000 additional vacant posts may also be abolished before June 30.

The decision has faced criticism from teachers’ associations and unions. Many believe the government should have filled these positions instead. They argue that removing posts may worsen staffing shortages.

Critics also say this step could reduce job opportunities in Punjab. They warn that existing employees may face extra workload in public institutions.

Despite criticism, officials maintain that the decision is necessary. They say it will help stabilize the financial condition of Punjab. It is also aimed at improving long-term budget discipline.
