Social Media Protection and Regulatory Authority (SMPRA) has started drafting its rules and regulations. The move marks an important step in digital governance in Pakistan.
The authority has been established under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA). It is responsible for monitoring and regulating social media platforms operating in Pakistan.
Officials say this is the first structured effort in Pakistan to create a full regulatory system for online content. The goal is to ensure safer digital spaces for users.
SMPRA will focus on improving compliance from social media companies. It aims to enforce local laws and ethical standards across digital platforms in Pakistan.
The authority will take action against harmful online content. This includes cyberbullying, fake news, extremist material, and content that promotes violence.
It will also work to protect users from online harassment and exploitation. Authorities believe these issues are growing in the digital space of Pakistan.
SMPRA will introduce clear content moderation rules. These rules will guide how platforms remove illegal or harmful material. It will also improve accountability for tech companies operating in Pakistan.
One key requirement may include setting up local offices. Social media companies could be asked to establish a presence within Pakistan to ensure better compliance.
The authority will also design a complaint system. This system will allow users in Pakistan to report harmful content and platform violations easily.
Ayaz Shaukat has been appointed as the first chairman of SMPRA. The authority was officially set up in early 2026.
SMPRA will also coordinate with other regulatory bodies. This includes the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). The focus will be on cybersecurity and digital safety in Pakistan.
Officials say the new framework will strengthen the digital ecosystem. It aims to make online platforms more responsible and transparent in Pakistan.
The next step is finalizing detailed regulations. These will cover registration rules, content policies, and penalties for violations.
