A major development has emerged from a European Country as Spain has approved a plan to grant legal status to around 500,000 undocumented migrants. The move is expected to benefit many Pakistani nationals currently living in the country.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the decision as both necessary and fair. He said the plan recognizes the contributions of migrants who are already part of daily life in this European Country. According to him, these individuals have helped support the economy and public services.
The government stated that the initiative also addresses demographic challenges. Spain, like many European nations, is facing an aging population. Officials believe that integrating migrants into the system will help sustain economic growth in the long term.
Under the new plan, eligible migrants will receive a one-year residency permit. This permit can be renewed if conditions are met. Those approved will be allowed to live and work across the European Country without restrictions. This is seen as a major relief for undocumented workers.
To qualify, applicants must prove they have been living in Spain for at least five months. They must also have a clean criminal record. The application process is set to begin on April 16 and will continue until the end of June.
Authorities in Pakistan have also provided clarification. The Bureau of Immigration and Overseas Employment stated that the plan applies only to those who were already in Spain before December 31, 2025. This condition is important for Pakistani nationals seeking to benefit from the policy.
However, the decision has not been without criticism. Spain’s opposition party, the People’s Party, has raised concerns. It warned that such measures could encourage more migrants to travel to the country illegally.
Reports indicate that Spain currently hosts a large number of undocumented migrants. Estimates suggest around 840,000 individuals were living without legal status as of early 2025. Many of them come from Latin America, along with other regions.
This step by a European Country stands out at a time when many nations are tightening immigration rules. Analysts say Spain’s policy reflects a different approach focused on inclusion and economic needs.
