Pakistan Enforces Strict 8PM Market Shutdown to Cut Energy Crisis

Pakistan has introduced a nationwide policy to close every Market and shopping mall early to save energy. The new rule will take effect from April 7 and will apply across most parts of the country.

The decision was taken during a high-level review meeting led by Shehbaz Sharif. The meeting focused on petroleum use, energy conservation, and broader austerity measures. Officials reviewed the rising energy demand and discussed steps to reduce unnecessary consumption.

Under the new policy, each Market, bazaar, and shopping mall must close at 8 PM. This rule will be enforced in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Islamabad Capital Territory, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities aim to ensure uniform implementation to achieve maximum energy savings.

However, there is a slight exception for some areas. In divisional headquarters of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, each Market and shopping mall will be allowed to operate until 9 PM. Officials said this adjustment was made to support local business activity while still promoting conservation.

Participants of the meeting were informed that the policy was finalized after consultation with all provincial governments. This coordination is expected to improve compliance and reduce confusion among traders and the public.

The government believes early closure of markets will significantly cut electricity usage. Officials say commercial areas consume a large share of power, especially during evening hours. By limiting operating hours, authorities expect to ease pressure on the national energy system.

Business owners and traders may face short-term challenges due to reduced working hours. However, the government has stressed that the decision is necessary given the current energy situation. The move is also part of a wider plan to manage fuel costs and improve efficiency.

Experts note that similar steps have been used in other countries during energy shortages. They say such measures can help stabilize supply if implemented effectively.

Overall, the new Market closure policy reflects the government’s effort to balance economic activity with energy conservation. Authorities will continue to monitor the situation and may adjust the policy based on results and public response.
