Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder, Imran Khan, has filed a miscellaneous application in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking permission to meet his lawyers for consultation regarding his appeal in the £190 million case.
Filed through Barrister Salman Safdar, the application requests immediate and uninterrupted access between Imran Khan and his legal team. The chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), the inspector general of Punjab Prisons, and the superintendent of Adiala Jail have been named as respondents in the petition.
The application highlights that Imran Khan has been unable to meet meaningfully with his lawyers since December 20, 2025—a period exceeding three months—effectively denying him legal access. It further noted that the suspension of sentence petition, pending since March 19, 2025, has already been heard on 16 separate dates. The petition alleges deliberate delays and obstructions by NAB and jail authorities, preventing lawyers from consulting their client.
Invoking the Jail Rules, 1978, and Articles 9, 10-A, and 14 of the Constitution, the application emphasizes that the right to consult legal counsel is a fundamental constitutional right. It argues that denying inmates access to their lawyers, families, or friends violates prison rules and constitutes a gross abuse of fundamental rights. The petition underscores that this right applies equally to prisoners facing serious charges, including capital offenses.
The court has been urged to issue an immediate order allowing Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to meet their counsel for effective preparation of their pending appeals. Lawyers for Bibi separately filed a motion seeking suspension of her sentence before her appeal hearing.
The £190 million case involves allegations of misusing funds donated to the Al-Qadir Trust, a welfare and educational organization established by Imran Khan and Bibi in 2018. Both deny wrongdoing, asserting they gained no personal financial benefit from the trust or related transactions.
