Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Implements Two-Month Plan to Cut Fuel Use

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet has approved a two-month fuel conservation plan to reduce government expenses and address rising energy costs. The decisions were made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi.

The new policy, called the Fuel Conservation and Responsible Governance Initiative, focuses on minimizing fuel use in government departments while avoiding additional burdens on the public. The measures will remain in effect for two months, after which authorities will review their impact and decide on any extension.

Key measures announced by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cabinet include making all government meetings 100% online to reduce travel-related fuel consumption. A 50% work-from-home policy will also be implemented in offices to further cut fuel and operational costs.

The fuel allowance for government vehicles will be reduced by 25%, bringing total reductions to 50% when combined with previous cuts. Police, rescue services, and other law enforcement agencies are exempted due to the nature of their work.

Use of VIP protocol vehicles and helicopters will be significantly minimized to reduce unnecessary government spending. Officials also banned unnecessary official events and dinners as part of broader austerity measures. A proposal to keep schools closed on Fridays was discussed, with virtual classes recommended to save fuel while maintaining academic continuity.

Authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will monitor petrol pumps daily to prevent hoarding or fuel supply manipulation. Diesel will remain available for farmers and wheat harvesting to protect agricultural production.

Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said the government aims to protect citizens from rising energy costs by reducing privileges enjoyed by state institutions and officials. He emphasized that relief should be provided to the public first, rather than asking citizens to make sacrifices.
