Train operations across Pakistan experienced temporary disruptions after employees of Pakistan Railways’ electric department went on strike over unpaid travel and health allowances pending for more than two years.
The sudden walkout led to technical issues in air-conditioned coaches and temporary power plant shutdowns. Despite the challenges, the railway administration continued train services by deploying emergency and alternative arrangements to manage onboard electrical systems.
Major services, including Awam Express, Pakistan Express, and Shalimar Express, departed without their regular electrical staff. Sub-engineers and divisional engineers were called in to ensure that essential power functions remained operational during the strike.
Officials said the electric staff refused to report for duty shortly before scheduled departures. Attempts at last-minute negotiations were unsuccessful, prompting the staff to gather at Rawalpindi Railway Station, where discussions with senior officials took place.
Following talks, the striking employees agreed to resume duties. It was also confirmed that formal negotiations regarding the pending allowances will begin on Wednesday in Lahore to resolve the long-standing financial grievances.
Divisional Superintendent Nooruddin Dawar stated that while passengers experienced minor difficulties, no train suffered a complete power failure. Additional technical staff were deployed to minimize disruption and maintain safe operations during the protest.
