Senior Pakistani actress Abida Begum has made a heartfelt appeal to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, seeking support amid severe personal hardship. A video of her plea has gone viral on social media, capturing widespread attention.
In the video, Abida Begum appeared emotional, urging the chief minister to hear her case. She rose to fame for her iconic role as “Chandi” in the classic drama Sona Chandi, which earned her widespread recognition and admiration across Pakistan.
She said she had dedicated 35 years of her life to the arts, while her late husband, Mirza Rashid Akhtar, contributed 40 years to the entertainment industry. She added that even during personal tragedies, including family deaths, they continued fulfilling their professional commitments.
Currently, Abida Begum stated that she is facing extreme distress. “A great injustice has been done to me. The roof over my head has been taken away,” she said. She highlighted her responsibility toward her two children and grandchildren and explained that her financial situation does not allow her to afford rented accommodation.
She also reached out to Punjab’s Information Minister Uzma Bukhari, requesting an opportunity to present her case. Referring to the chief minister’s statement that “women are my red line,” she said, “I am an artist of this country. I have worked very hard. For God’s sake, please stand by me and help me.”
The plea by Abida Begum has drawn public sympathy and concern for the welfare of veteran artists in Pakistan. Many fans and fellow performers have voiced support on social media, urging authorities to provide immediate assistance.
