Australia Sets Official Date for Ramadan 2026 Start

Australia has officially announced that Ramadan 1447H is expected to commence on February 19, 2026, following confirmation from the Australian Fatwa Council, which based its decision on astronomical calculations. Religious authorities stated that scientific data showed the new moon would not be visible on February 17, making it unlikely for the holy month to begin the same evening.

Ibrahim Abu Mohamad, the Grand Mufti of Australia, explained that consultations and sky projections indicated the crescent would only appear after sunset in major cities such as Sydney and Perth. As a result, Ramadan cannot start that night. Therefore, the first night of the sacred month, along with Taraweeh prayers, will take place after Isha on February 18, with fasting to begin the following day.

The Mufti also encouraged Muslims across the country to remain respectful of varying scholarly opinions regarding moon sighting methods. He stressed the importance of unity, patience, and solidarity within the community, particularly while remembering people around the world who are facing hardships, especially those in the Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, the Australian National Imams Council is continuing to evaluate local moon-sighting reports to issue final confirmations closer to the date. Despite relying on astronomical predictions, authorities aim to ensure accuracy through both scientific and traditional observation methods.

Across Australia, Muslim communities have already started preparing spiritually and practically for Ramadan. Families are organizing work schedules, planning prayers, and arranging charitable obligations such as Zakat and Zakat Al Fitr. Religious leaders emphasized that early planning allows believers to observe the holy month with greater focus and devotion while remaining flexible until official announcements are finalized.
