The new Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise from Hyderabad has finalized its team identity, with owner Fawad Sarwar confirming that the team’s full name and logo are ready and will be officially revealed soon, coinciding with the league’s first-ever player auction. Sarwar said the franchise is planning a formal launch event to unveil the branding and generate excitement among fans ahead of the auction.
Hyderabad has already begun building its off-field structure, appointing Jason Gillespie as head coach, with Craig White and Grant Bradburn joining as assistant coaches. Regarding captaincy, Sarwar emphasized that leadership will not automatically be given to senior or high-profile players. “No player, whether Pakistani or foreign, has any inherent right to leadership just because he is a big name or senior,” he explained. “We have our own selection process… a captain can be anyone, the key is to be a good leader.”
When asked about star cricketer Babar Azam, Sarwar admitted he is a personal favorite and expressed interest in signing him if circumstances allow, though final decisions will depend on which players are retained by other franchises. He highlighted that Hyderabad’s strategy will focus on fairness and merit rather than reputation alone.
Sarwar praised the PSL’s introduction of an auction system for the 11th season, describing it as a crucial step to align the league with international sports standards. Auctions, he noted, reward performance and motivate players to maintain high levels of consistency. While the team may consider a few direct signings, he refrained from disclosing names at this stage.
The Hyderabad owner, who has prior cricket operations experience in the United States, said his group purchased the franchise out of passion rather than short-term profit. He views sports teams as long-term assets with growing value and confirmed that the franchise can operate the team sustainably without financial strain. Choosing Hyderabad was personal for Sarwar, and the team has already discussed upgrading Niaz Stadium, with PCB support expected to improve facilities. Work on the venue is anticipated to begin soon, reflecting the franchise’s commitment to building a strong cricketing presence in the city.
