Punjab bans 132 suggestive songs during Basant festivities

The Punjab government has imposed a ban on 132 Punjabi songs during Basant celebrations and warned of strict legal action against anyone who violates the directive, according to an official notification.

The notification makes it clear that the listed songs cannot be played at any public or private events, including rooftop gatherings, commercial venues, or other Basant-related activities. Authorities have stated that cases will be registered under relevant laws against individuals found ignoring the ban.

Officials said the decision was taken to prevent the use of songs containing objectionable, suggestive, or inappropriate lyrics during public festivities. The government believes such content can negatively affect public decency and create law and order concerns, especially during large-scale celebrations like Basant, which attract huge crowds.

Basant has remained a sensitive event in Punjab over the years due to safety and security issues, particularly those linked to kite flying. As a result, authorities introduce strict rules and monitoring measures every year to avoid accidents and maintain discipline during the festival.

The banned list reportedly includes several well-known Punjabi songs that have been popular at celebrations in the past. The restriction has been enforced under the Theatrical Performances Standard Operating Procedures issued by the Punjab Information and Culture Department through an official letter dated August 13, 2025.

Meanwhile, the Punjab government has finalized standard operating procedures for Basant celebrations in Lahore, scheduled to take place from February 6 to 8. Minister for Information and Culture Azma Bukhari confirmed that the festival would be held under a tightly regulated framework, with public safety as the top priority.

According to the SOPs, kites will only be sold through authorized stalls, cotton thread will be allowed, and the use of unsafe materials will be strictly prohibited. Motorcycle movement will remain restricted during Basant, and safety wires will be installed on bikes to reduce the risk of accidents.

Authorities have reiterated that these measures are aimed at ensuring a safe, orderly, and family-friendly Basant celebration across the city.
