The United States is preparing to host Venezuela’s new leader for high level talks. A senior US official confirmed the plan on Tuesday. This visit may mark a major change in relations between Washington and Caracas after many years of tension.

Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, is expected to travel to the United States soon. No exact date has been announced yet. Officials said planning is still in progress, and details will be shared later.

This visit will be historic. No sitting Venezuelan leader has visited the United States in more than twenty-five years. The last such visit took place in 1989 during the presidency of Carlos Andres Perez. Since then, relations between the two countries have often remained cold.

Rodriguez became interim president after dramatic events earlier this month. A US military strike on January 3 led to the capture of former leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. The operation followed months of rising tensions over alleged drug trafficking and security concerns.

After taking office, the interim president spoke openly about her approach to the United States. She said she would rely on diplomacy and calm dialogue. She stressed that fear would not guide her decisions. She added that talks were the best way to solve long-standing disputes.

“We are in the process of dialogue,” Rodriguez said. “We want to face our differences through diplomacy.” Her remarks showed a clear shift in tone from earlier years of conflict and sanctions.

The planned visit signals a possible new chapter in bilateral relations. For many years, Washington imposed strong sanctions on Venezuela. These measures target leaders, state firms, and key industries. Relations worsened as political and economic crises deepened inside Venezuela.

Despite the warmer tone, challenges remain. Delcy Rodriguez is still under US sanctions. These include an asset of freeze and travel limits. US officials did not say whether any temporary waivers would be issued for her visit.

Before the announcement, Rodriguez addressed Venezuelan lawmakers. She said she would represent her people with dignity if she traveled to Washington. She promised to defend national sovereignty and speak firmly during talks.

Analysts say the visit could open doors for future cooperation. Issues may include sanctions of relief, security concerns, and humanitarian aid. Some experts also expect talks on restoring trade and easing financial restrictions.

The White House has not released a full agenda yet. Officials only confirmed that discussions would focus on rebuilding trust and reducing conflict. They also said both sides want a peaceful path forward. For more updates on immigrant rights, read our news on Zohran Mamdani Pledges Protection for Venezuelan Residents in NYC

For now, the world watches closely. The arrival of an interim president in Washington sends a strong message. It shows that dialogue may replace years of hostility. Whether this leads to lasting change remains to be seen.
