Pakistan, Turkey Join Trump Initiative—What Board of Peace Means

Pakistan and Turkey have officially joined the Board of Peace, a new international initiative led by US President Donald Trump. The invitation was extended to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to participate in the board, which initially focused on Gaza but now aims to address broader global conflicts.

According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, joining the Board of Peace aligns with the country’s ongoing support for implementing the Gaza Peace Plan under UN Security Council Resolution 2803. Pakistan hopes the initiative will help achieve a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and increase humanitarian aid for the Palestinian people.

The Foreign Office reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Palestinian self-determination. Islamabad emphasized the need for a sovereign Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital. Pakistan stated that it looks forward to playing a constructive role on the Board of Peace, contributing to peace and reconstruction in Gaza.

Turkey will be represented by Hakan Fidan at the board, acting on behalf of President Erdogan. The formal launch ceremony is scheduled during the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, with President Trump presiding.

The board also includes high-profile members such as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff, former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, and Jared Kushner. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also accepted an invitation to join the board.

Several countries, including the UAE, Bahrain, Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Morocco, and Vietnam, have confirmed participation. Meanwhile, Norway, France, and Sweden have declined to join, citing concerns about the initiative.

The Board of Peace charter states that it will promote stability, restore lawful governance, and secure lasting peace in conflict-affected regions. Trump, as chairman, will have authority to form, modify, or dissolve subsidiary bodies and appoint leaders to the board’s Executive Board.
