The death toll rises to 31 after a deadly fire engulfed Gul Plaza on MA Jinnah Road, officials confirmed on Wednesday. Rescue teams continue searching for 86 people still missing.
Rescue 1122 officials recovered three more bodies today from the debris. Human remains were sent to hospitals for identification. So far, 11 victims have been officially identified. DNA samples from 51 relatives are being used to confirm identities.
Authorities reported that the family of 65-year-old Jahangir Shah registered a missing person’s complaint. This raised the total missing to 86. Rescue operations have been ongoing for the fifth consecutive day.
Officials said the ground, mezzanine, and first floors have been cleared. However, over 40 percent of the buildings have collapsed. The remaining structure is unsafe and at risk of further collapse.
Rescue teams have removed 32 vehicles and heavy generators from the rooftop to reduce pressure on the building. Debris clearance continues using heavy machinery and manual labor. Officials said the unstable condition of the building is slowing the operation.
Deputy Commissioner South, Javed Nabi Khoso, said the building will not be demolished until all missing persons are found. Location data shows 39 missing individuals were likely inside the Gul Plaza, though some areas remain inaccessible due to safety concerns.
Smoke and intense heat remain in parts of the building, prompting cooling operations alongside rescue efforts. Nearby Rampa Plaza has been temporarily sealed. Authorities are reviewing building plans from the Sindh Building Control Authority to assess risks.
The fire has left families devastated and the city in mourning. Officials urge caution and cooperation with ongoing rescue efforts. Stay updated on the latest developments as the Gul Plaza fire investigation begins, with officials seeking accountability.
The death toll rises as authorities continue to recover bodies from the wreckage. Emergency teams remain on high alert for any survivors.
