Apple has released a serious security alert urging iPhone users, particularly those using iPhone 11 and newer models, to update their devices to iOS 26. The warning follows the discovery of security flaws in WebKit, the browser engine that powers Safari and all other browsers on iOS.
According to Apple, the vulnerabilities were exploited by mercenary spyware to carry out highly targeted and advanced attacks on iPhones running older versions of iOS. These threats raised concerns among authorities, making the update to iOS 26 critical for protecting user data and privacy.
The alert gained further attention after reports revealed that the U.S. government issued warnings once it became evident that nearly half of iPhone users had not yet upgraded to iOS 26. Apple emphasized that devices running earlier versions remain at higher risk of exploitation.
Apple explained that iOS 26 introduces multiple security improvements, including new anti-scam protections for calls and messages, stronger Safari fingerprint defenses, and enhanced safeguards against malicious wired connections. These upgrades are designed to block emerging threats and reduce the chances of unauthorized access.
The update also expands the integration of Apple Intelligence, enabling improved cross-language communication, more personalized image creation, and greater overall productivity for users.
While iPhones are generally regarded as more secure than many Android devices due to Apple’s tightly controlled ecosystem, recent incidents show that even iOS is not immune to sophisticated cyberattacks. Apple stressed that failing to install the latest updates leaves devices vulnerable, reinforcing the importance of upgrading to iOS 26 as soon as possible.
