Public holiday announced on January 17

The Sindh government has officially declared a public holiday announced on January 17 for educational institutions across the province. This is in observance of the holy occasion of Shab-e-Meraj.

According to the government notification, both government and private schools will remain closed on January 17. Colleges and universities are also included in this holiday.

Muslims observe Shab-e-Meraj every year on the 27th of Rajab in the Islamic lunar calendar. The night commemorates the Isra and Meraj journey of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). On this journey, the Prophet was taken on the heavenly animal, al-Buraq, crossing seven skies to meet Allah Almighty.

During this ascension, the Prophet attained closeness to Allah and drank from the Divine fountain of spiritual knowledge. Upon returning, he shared this knowledge with mankind. Shab-e-Meraj also marks the moment when the five daily prayers (Salat) were made mandatory for Muslims.

On this holy night, faithful gather at mosques after Isha prayer. Special prayers continue until Fajr. Communities organize gatherings and Mahafil-e-Naat to commemorate the occasion.

Homes, streets, and especially mosques are decorated with colorful buntings and pennants. At night, these are illuminated with electric lights, candles, and oil lamps, creating a festive atmosphere.

Many people also visit the graves of their loved ones. They pray for the departed souls and seek blessings from Allah Almighty.

The public holiday announced on January 17 ensures that people can participate fully in religious observances. Schools, colleges, and workplaces are closed so citizens can take part in prayers and family gatherings.

This holiday is part of the province’s effort to allow communities to celebrate Shab-e-Meraj with devotion. Citizens are encouraged to spend the day on worship, reflection, and family activities.

The holiday also helps in reinforcing the importance of spiritual traditions and cultural heritage among younger generations. Read our update on Rajab Moon Sighted in Pakistan, Month Begins on December 22.  The article explains the sighting details and the start of the Islamic month of Rajab across the country.
