An Air India pilot scheduled to operate a long-haul flight from Canada to India was removed from duty in Vancouver after reportedly failing alcohol tests. The incident occurred on December 23, before a flight from Vancouver to Delhi.
Canadian police at Vancouver International Airport conducted two breathalyzer tests on the pilot. Both tests indicated that he was not fit to operate the aircraft. Authorities immediately removed him from the cockpit roster, preventing the flight from departing on time.
Transport Canada has described the incident as a “serious” safety breach. The regulator has sent a formal letter to Air India, requesting a detailed internal investigation. The airline has been asked to submit findings and outline measures to prevent similar incidents by January 26. The letter, signed by Transport Canada official Ajit Oommen, also warned that enforcement action may follow.
In response, Air India confirmed the Vancouver–Delhi flight was delayed due to concerns about the pilot’s fitness for duty. The airline arranged a replacement pilot to operate the flight. The original captain has been grounded pending the investigation.
Air India emphasized its zero-tolerance policy for any breach of regulations. “The pilot has been removed from flying duties while the inquiry continues. Any verified violation will result in strict disciplinary action,” the airline stated.
Canadian law bars pilots from operating an aircraft within 12 hours of consuming alcohol. Transport Canada has not released additional public comments, but the case highlights the strict enforcement of aviation safety rules in Canada.
