Sixty-two members of the U.S. House of Representatives have addressed a letter to President Joe Biden, urging him to advocate for the release of Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former Prime Minister, who is currently detained in Pakistan.
The letter calls for action to release all political prisoners in Pakistan, including Khan, and to halt the ongoing detention of PTI workers. It emphasizes that human rights should be central to U.S. policy concerning Pakistan, urging the Biden administration to obtain assurances from the Pakistani government regarding Khan’s safety and well-being. The Congress members have also requested that U.S. embassy officials visit Khan in prison to assess his condition.

The lawmakers voiced concerns over what they characterize as a “crackdown on social media” and heightened efforts to suppress political activities in Pakistan.
Furthermore, the letter raises issues regarding allegations of electoral rigging and irregularities in Pakistan’s recent general elections, accusing the authorities of trying to disenfranchise voters. The Congress members stressed that the U.S. should uphold democracy and human rights in Pakistan.
