Heavy rains and a glacier burst have caused severe damage in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. At least 17 people were killed, and many others injured in these disasters.
In Gilgit-Baltistan, the glacier burst led to flash floods that hit the Ghizer district hard. Eight people lost their lives in the floodwaters. Two more died in the Diamer district. The floodwaters damaged dozens of homes and government buildings in Hunza, Nagar, and Skardu. Key roads like the Karakoram Highway, Babusar Road, and Gilgit-Skardu Road were blocked due to landslides and flooding.
The glacier burst and heavy rains caused significant disruption to daily life and damaged crops, worsening the situation for many families.
In Azad Jammu and Kashmir, seven people died in Muzaffarabad’s Sarli Sacha area, including six members of the same family. The heavy rains also caused flooding in Neelum Valley, where several houses and two bridges were washed away. Hundreds of tourists were stranded in the Ratti Gali area; rescue teams have saved around 100 people so far.
Authorities reported rising water levels in Neelum, Jhelum, and Poonch rivers. They warned residents to stay vigilant and follow safety instructions.
Rescue and relief operations are ongoing. The government has urged people in affected areas to remain cautious as heavy rains and glacier-related floods may continue.
This recent glacier burst highlights the risks posed by natural disasters in mountainous regions. Efforts are underway to repair damaged infrastructure and assist those affected.
