At least 15 people were killed after a bus carrying university students collided with a minivan in northern Malaysia on Monday, according to police and rescue services.
The crash occurred near Gerik on the busy East-West Highway, close to the Thai border. Thirteen victims died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.
Authorities said the students were returning to campus after an Islamic public holiday when the accident happened. Preliminary investigations suggest the bus lost control and rear-ended the minivan.
Photos from the scene showed the overturned green bus with severe rear damage, while the red minivan had skidded into a ditch with its windows shattered.
“Some victims escaped on their own, others were ejected from the vehicle, and some remained trapped inside the bus,” the Perak State Disaster Management Authority stated.
This marks Malaysia’s deadliest road accident in over a decade, highlighting ongoing safety concerns on the country’s hazardous highways.
