The Counter Terrorism Department has arrested four terrorists linked to the banned Zainabiyoun Brigade during a joint operation in Karachi. Officials confirmed the arrests on Thursday.
According to CTD officials, the main suspect is Rayat Hussain, also known as Molvi. He is described as a highly dangerous operative. Authorities said he was the central facilitator behind several terrorist activities in the city.
CTD officials identified Rayat Hussain as Zainabiyoun Brigade’s Karachi ringleader, responsible for coordinating logistics and operations. Investigators revealed he provided weapons used in the targeted killing of journalist and television anchor Imtiaz Mir.
Officials said the banned outfit had given Rayat Hussain the code name “Hamza.” He handled weapons supply, transport arrangements, safe houses, and financial support. His role placed him at the core of the group’s Karachi network.
Despite holding a master’s degree and teaching at a madrassa, officials said he remained actively involved in terrorism. CTD officers stated that his educational background helped him avoid suspicion for years.
Investigators also revealed that Rayat Hussain supplied weapons to another terrorist, Masoom Raza. Masoom Raza was previously arrested with assistance from his associate Israr Gilgiti. He is accused of several targeted killings for the same group.
Officials said Zainabiyoun Brigade’s Karachi ringleader created multiple operational cells across the city. Each cell worked independently and only reported to him. This structure reduced the risk of exposure.
The other arrested suspects were identified as Hussain Imlaq, Sajid Ali, and Muhammad Askari. CTD officials said they acted on direct instructions from the ringleader.
During the operation, CTD recovered four pistols, ammunition, and a hit list. Officials said the weapons were used in multiple attacks across Karachi.
Authorities stated the suspects were involved in the killing of a man in Baldia Town Sector 7. In another incident in 2024, a muezzin was injured during a shooting in the Jubilee area.
CTD officials confirmed that cases have been registered under anti-terrorism laws. Further investigations are underway to trace remaining facilitators and sleeper cells.
Officials said the arrest of Zainabiyoun Brigade’s Karachi ringleader is a breakthrough. They believe it will disrupt future terrorist planning in the city. Authorities say the crackdown is part of broader counterterrorism efforts across the country.
