YouTube Subscription Prices Increase — What’s Behind the Latest Hike

YouTube has announced a new increase in subscription prices in the United States. This is the first price hike by YouTube in three years. The updated pricing will apply from the next billing cycle for users.

According to the company, the standard YouTube Premium individual plan will now cost $15.99 per month. This is an increase from the previous price of $13.99. The family plan has also seen a significant jump. It now costs $26.99 per month, which is $4 higher than before.

The company said the price increase is necessary to maintain key features. These include ad-free viewing, background play, and offline downloads. YouTube stated that these features require ongoing investment to improve user experience.

In addition to Premium plans, YouTube has also updated its lower-cost options. YouTube Lite, which offers limited ad-free viewing, now costs $8.99 per month. However, this plan still includes ads on Shorts and music-related content. It also does not include access to YouTube Music Premium.

Meanwhile, the standalone YouTube Music Premium subscription has also become more expensive. The monthly price has increased by $1, bringing it to $11.99. This service allows users to stream music without ads and download songs for offline listening.

This marks the first price change since 2021. YouTube Premium was first introduced in 2018. It replaced the earlier YouTube Red service, which launched in 2015. Over the years, the platform has expanded its offerings and user base.

The decision comes as part of a wider trend in the streaming industry. Major platforms like Spotify, Netflix, and Disney+ have also raised their subscription prices recently. Rising production costs and operational expenses are key reasons behind these increases.

Despite the higher prices, YouTube continues to grow. The company reported that its combined YouTube Music and Premium services have crossed 125 million global subscribers. This is a strong increase from 100 million users in 2024.
