Yasmin Rashid Discharged under Police Pressure, Returned to Kot Lakhpat Jail

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]PTI Punjab President Dr. Yasmin Rashid was discharged from Lahore’s Services Hospital on Sunday after doctors were allegedly pressured by a senior police officer, claimed her lawyer Rana Mudassar.

Rashid was admitted on Wednesday after fainting in Kot Lakhpat Jail, reportedly due to inadequate medical treatment. She has been imprisoned for nearly a year, facing multiple charges related to the May 9, 2023, nationwide protests and riots following former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s arrest.

Initially detained on May 12 under the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, Rashid was re-arrested the next day for her alleged role in the riots.

Her lawyer alleged that the 72-year-old PTI leader, a cancer survivor, was denied proper treatment by jail authorities despite severe vomiting and stomach issues.

Mudassar claimed that Rashid’s lawyers and family were not allowed to visit her in the hospital. He stated she was kept in an “uncomfortable place” and suffered back pain exacerbated by the hospital bed’s poor condition.

Doctors reportedly advised that Rashid needed to stay for “another two to three days” due to a serious infection requiring further investigation. Despite her improvement, additional tests were recommended.

Unexpectedly, a journalist met Rashid, prompting the deputy inspector general of operations to pressure doctors to discharge her, despite it being a holiday. Consequently, she was discharged at 8 a.m.

Instead of an ambulance, Rashid was taken back to jail in a van parked in the sun.

Mudassar lamented that Rashid was being denied her “basic rights” and emphasized the state’s responsibility to ensure her well-being. Her family was concerned that continued imprisonment under the same conditions might lead to another serious illness, potentially fatal.

Doctors agreed that proper care was crucial.

It should be noted that Yasmin Rashid is on judicial remand, meaning the Kot Lakhpat Jail administration, not the police, is responsible for her custody.

The Kot Lakhpat Jail superintendent’s office stated that Rashid had “recovered,” prompting her return to prison.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
