China’s President Xi Jinping congratulated Indian President Droupadi Murmu on India’s Republic Day, calling the two nations good neighbours, friends, and partners. The message was reported by the official Xinhua news agency.
Xi said that over the past year, China-India relations have steadily improved and are important for global peace and prosperity. He described the two countries as the “dragon and the elephant dancing together”, emphasizing cooperation and harmony.
The Chinese president expressed hope that both nations would expand exchanges, strengthen trade, and address mutual concerns to maintain healthy and stable relations. He highlighted the importance of dialogue in resolving issues peacefully.
China and India share a 3,800 km border, which has been disputed since the 1950s. Tensions escalated in 2020 when a clash in the Himalayas resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian and four Chinese soldiers, leading to heavy militarization on both sides.
Since then, both countries have taken steps to restore trust. Last year, several high-level visits helped improve diplomatic ties. In 2025, direct flights between China and India resumed, and trade and investment flows increased significantly. Analysts say these moves show a commitment to cooperation despite past conflicts.
Xi’s statement also stressed that being “good neighbours, friends, and partners” is the right choice for both countries. The message comes at a time when global geopolitics remain tense, highlighting China’s interest in stable regional relations.
