World Sight Day is a global observance that takes place every year on the second Thursday of October. Its primary goal is to raise awareness about blindness and vision impairment. This year, the event is scheduled for October 12, and it revolves around the theme ‘love your eyes at work.’ To bring attention to this important issue, the Indian government has arranged various events throughout the country.
World Sight Day 2023 emphasizes the significance of safeguarding one’s vision in the workplace. It also calls upon business leaders to prioritize the eye health of their employees, regardless of location.

Since its inception in 2000, World Sight Day has been coordinated by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness in collaboration with the World Health Organization. Initially, it was part of the SightFirst Campaign by the Lions Club International Foundation, and throughout its 22-year history, it has consistently featured a designated theme.
Preceding World Sight Day, the United Nations commemorated the occasion by hosting a unique photo exhibition in the corridors of its New York headquarters. This exhibition, titled ‘2030 IN SIGHT,’ is considered the world’s first ‘blurred’ photo exhibition, focusing on various vision-related issues. It offers a perspective on the world as seen by individuals living with preventable sight loss and encourages viewers to contemplate the direct impact of treatable eye health conditions on individuals, communities, and the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as explained by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) in a recent press release.
