World Mental Health Day: Promoting Awareness and Well-Being

World Mental Health Day, which falls on October 10 each year, was officially established by the World Federation of Mental Health (WFMH) in the early 1990s. This observance serves the purpose of raising awareness about mental health issues and facilitating open discussions on conditions such as borderline personality disorder, depression, anxiety, and more. It aims to create a safe and supportive environment for individuals to openly acknowledge and address these mental health challenges.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) website, World Mental Health Day provides a platform for all stakeholders involved in mental health issues to share their efforts and discuss further actions needed to make mental health care accessible worldwide. The theme for World Mental Health Day 2023, “Mental health is a universal human right,” encourages individuals and communities to unite in addressing mental health concerns.

The primary objective is to increase public awareness of mental health issues and coordinate assistance for those affected. This initiative seeks to enhance understanding, raise awareness, and promote measures that protect and nurture the mental well-being of all individuals.

In 1992, the World Mental Health Day was founded by the WFMH under the leadership of Richard Hunter, who served as the deputy secretary-general at the time. The inaugural theme for World Mental Health Day in 1994 was “Improving the Quality of Mental Health Services Throughout the World.” This campaign generated feedback from 27 nations and subsequently led to national mental health campaigns in countries such as Australia and England.

On October 10, numerous organizations worldwide come together to commemorate World Mental Health Day, offering an opportunity for everyone to contribute to the promotion and maintenance of mental well-being. This day serves as a global platform for individuals to engage in activities that raise awareness and advocate for mental health.
